Plagues and diseases

Given the diversity of plants and small size of our garden, you shouldn’t have too many problems of this kind. Nevertheless, it’s important to keep an eye on your plants in order to be able to act as soon as you detect something wrong.
The most common problems are the appearance of insects such as scale, red spider mite or whitefly, which feed on plant sap; or fungi such as mildew or leaf spot, brought on by overwatering.
In the case of scale, you can either carefully remove the insects or spray the affected areas with soapy water. This remedy also works in the case of whitefly, while for the red spider mite, which is hardly visible, onion skins wrapped around the plant act as a repellent.
Mildew is visible in the form of a white dust, while leaf spot looks like dark mucus. As a first measure we can cut and remove the affected parts in order to stop the disease spreading. We can also “air” our garden, by clearing and pruning some plants to improve ventilation.
We should avoid using chemical products as they can be dangerous and are not very ecological, and can be substituted for other treatments. If there are any doubts we can always consult a gardening book or ask a professional.
We recommend "The ecological family garden" by Mariano Bueno where you can find out all about possible plagues and diseases that can affect your garden.
